The app used to be strictly for setting up Google's smart speakers and connecting your smart home devices. You can also segment your gadgets into multiple homes if you have an office and an apartment. The other smart displays we've tested can also automatically adjust their brightness based on ambient light to an extent, but the Nest Hub is much better at it as it also makes adjustments based on color temperature. All of these features are the same on all of the Google Assistant-equipped smart displays, and my favorite feature of both the Lenovo Smart Display and the JBL Link View has made its way intact to the Google Nest Hub.
You can quickly turn off lights, lock doors or broadcast a message with these shortcuts. At the bottom of the drop-down menu, Google shows lights for the current location you've assigned to the Nest Hub. You can also use this menu to "view rooms" and see all of your devices organized by room.

This will work automatically if you have an Android phone and it works on Apple's iPhones too, as long as you have the Google Assistant app installed. Calls are built into the Home Hub, letting you make free calls to UK numbers. And, if you set your mobile number in the app, caller ID even works properly. You can now make Google Duo calls over the internet; as the Home Hub doesn’t have a camera, you can’t make video calls, although other smart displays with cameras can. In addition, the camera in the Hub Max is a full-fledged Nest security camera, and you can use it to monitor your home and get activity alerts when you’re away.

Naturally, Google Assistant can do a lot more than that, managing your connected home, teaching you how to cook, and yes, making Google Duo video calls. A smart Nest Cam, to be specific, with a wide-angle lens capable of automatically adjusting to keep you centered in the frame. But that's not the only thing that makes it smart, as the camera can stay on when you're away from home, allowing you to remotely keep an eye on things directly from your phone.

Neatly, with the likes of Philips Hue, Home View can be used to change bulb colour as well as the brightness and toggling lights on and off. This is something that the Echo Show can’t do, only giving you on/off and brightness controls. The Google Home Hub also has better support for thermostats, and even let me change individual rooms with Honeywell Evohome, something that the Echo Show can’t do. The bigger Hub Max is also much louder and better sounding than the smaller version. It can fill a room with music and gets loud enough to overpower the sound of a running faucet while I’m doing dishes.
But the Hub Max’s bigger size and higher price tag mean it has more to live up to, and even though it’s still an excellent picture frame and competent smart display, it’s not quite as endearing as its smaller sibling. Scroll through your display screen options and tap any one of them if you want more information. If you can’t get there Google will even show you how you can go about it on the map as well as send you directions through your phone. If you have an Android smartphone then this process will work automatically, but it works on Apple iPhones as well. However, you’ll have to install the Google Assistant app before you can use it.
The ~170 ppi sounds like you'll get NES-era graphics compared to a smartphone, but the device is intended to be used on a table, usually at arm's length. It's in the same density range as a desktop computer screen, which is fine. Smartly, if you use your voice to change a thermostat or light, the Home Hub show the touch controls on the screen. For example, you can turn your kitchen lights on and then use the touch controls to pick the exact brightness you want. You can play music using Spotify, Deezer, Google Play Music or YouTube Music, with the screen even showing you suggested music.
It will certainly suffice as a basic home speaker, but the Lenovo has a slight edge. Google calls this feature Face Match and setting it up is an entirely opt-in process that involves taking a few photos of your face in the Google Home app on your phone and sending them to the Hub Max. Google says that all of the facial recognition is done locally on the device and nothing is sent to or stored in the cloud. If you don’t set up Face Match for everyone in the home, the Hub Max will default to showing general information and will not display personalized things.
It filtered out the bad ones where the subject was out of focus or not properly framed, and showed the rest on the Hub. Plug it in and set it up on your Wi-Fi using the Google Home app, then, thanks to the built-in Google Assistant, you can ask Google Nest Hub any question you'd ask the original Google Home. Nest sent me the mist version, and I love how it looks on my bedside table, especially with Google's curated image library set as the screen saver. You can also set it to cycle through your own images stored in Google Photos, or display the time in full-screen mode with your choice of clock faces. As the Home Hub is powered by Google search, it’s far more accurate when finding local businesses and answering generic questions than the Echo devices. Google is also more conversational and doesn’t need quite the same rigid use of language that Alexa does. Control connected devices such as lights, power plugs, thermostats, and more.

Google Home Hub is actually very small in size, however, that doesn’t really seem to matter because it is surprisingly useful in very many ways.
